AWAKENING THE SPIRIT: Understanding the Danger of Communicating With the Dead

Good morning, Children of God. I come to you today with a crucial message of correction and spiritual awakening. There are misunderstandings in the body of Christ that require immediate attention – particularly concerning our spiritual alignment and practices. The question we must confront today is this: Are we aligning ourselves and our possessions with the Spirit of the Living God, or have we unknowingly been aligning them with the spirits of the dead?

Many believers today engage in practices that open dangerous spiritual doors without realizing the consequences. We see people seeking guidance from deceased relatives, performing rituals to honor ancestors, believing that dead family members can protect or curse them, and interpreting dreams of the dead as divine messages. Some even believe in reincarnation or ancestral spirits returning to guide the living. These practices may seem harmless or culturally normal, but they directly contradict God’s Word and open believers to demonic deception.

We must understand the biblical progression from Old Testament practices to New Testament truth. In the Old Testament, we do find examples of people seeking contact with the dead – King Saul consulting the witch of Endor to summon Samuel’s spirit being the most famous example. But these practices were never approved by God; they were recorded as warnings. When Jesus came, He established a completely new spiritual order. The veil was torn, and we now have direct access to God through Christ. The shadow of seeking spiritual guidance through intermediaries – whether dead prophets or ancestral spirits – has been replaced by the reality of relationship with God through the Holy Spirit.

The truth about what happens when a person dies is crucial to understanding this danger. Ecclesiastes 12:7 makes it clear: “The spirit returns to God who gave it.” When a believer dies, their spirit goes to be with the Lord. The anointing that operated through them was never their own spirit but the Holy Spirit working through them. Therefore, it is impossible for the spirit of your dead relative to be communicating with you, appearing in your dreams, or influencing your daily life. Any spiritual manifestation claiming to be a dead person is what Scripture calls a “familiar spirit” – a demonic entity that impersonates the dead to deceive the living.

This deception is particularly prevalent in many cultural traditions, where people are taught that ancestors can bless or curse them, that poverty or success is determined by ancestral spirits, or that certain rituals must be performed to appease the dead. These beliefs keep generations in bondage, blaming spiritual forces for problems that may have natural causes, and seeking solutions in the wrong places. The truth is that many life challenges – poverty, sickness, relationship problems – may stem from natural circumstances, human decisions, or systemic issues rather than ancestral curses. When we lack spiritual awakening, we misdiagnose the source of our problems and pursue wrong solutions.

The glorious truth of the Gospel is that Jesus replaced all forms of spiritual seeking with the gift of the Holy Spirit. We don’t need to go through mediums, ancestors, or dead relatives to receive guidance, protection, or blessing. We have the Holy Spirit living within us – our Comforter, Teacher, and Guide. He is our divine connection to God, and He leads us into all truth. The critical question every believer must learn to ask is: “Which spirit am I consulting?” Your answer will determine whether you walk in freedom or bondage, truth or deception.

Today, I call you to spiritual awakening. Pray for discernment to recognize any area of your life where you might be aligning with the spirits of the dead. Break every agreement with familiar spirits, renounce every tradition that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and commit to seeking only the Holy Spirit’s guidance. Your life, your family, and your possessions must be aligned solely with the Spirit of the Living God.

Let us pray: Heavenly Father, in Jesus’ mighty name, we come before You seeking awakening and deliverance. Open our eyes to see any area where we have unknowingly aligned with the spirits of the dead. We break every agreement with familiar spirits, we renounce every ancestral tradition that contradicts Your Word, and we declare our full alignment with Your Holy Spirit. Lead us, teach us, and guide us into all truth. Detach us from every deceptive practice and connect us completely to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
