Introduction:
Good morning, Church! Family of God! I want to speak to you today from a place of divine concern and revelation. The Lord has laid a critical question on my heart, a question of spiritual discovery. It’s a simple question, but your answer will determine the course of your life, your peace, and your destiny.
The question is this: What are you connected to?
We all live our lives connected to something. We come from families, we have cultures, we build friendships, we enter marriages, we live in certain places. And the truth is, these are not just physical or social connections—they are spiritual connections. There are spirits behind these things. Spirits that influence you. Spirits that guide you. Spirits that control you.
Some of us are connected to spirits through our family lineage, patterns we didn’t start but we find ourselves repeating. Some are connected through cultural traditions that war against the knowledge of God. Some are connected through the spirit of their friendships, or the spiritual atmosphere of their neighborhood.
And in times of need, many good people, desperate for a breakthrough, find themselves looking for help irregardless of where it comes from! They’ll try anything, go anywhere, just to get some relief. But child of God, you must ask: Which spirit is answering you?
Point 1: The Wrong Connections
Let’s identify the counterfeit connections. These are the vines that are not the True Vine.
The Family Connection: This is the spirit of your father’s house. It’s that generational curse of addiction, debt, divorce, sickness, or a spirit of poverty that just won’t let go. You didn’t start it, but you’re connected to it.
The Cultural Connection: These are the traditions of men, the rituals and practices that our culture honors, even when they directly disobey the Word of God. The worship of ancestors, the reliance on charms, the pursuit of status at all costs.
The Friendship Connection: “Bad company corrupts good character.” The spirit your friends carry—the spirit of gossip, the spirit of lust, the spirit of rebellion—can become your connection if you’re not careful.
The Spirit of Religion: This is a dangerous one! It’s a connection to rules and rituals, to appearance and performance. It makes you look holy on the outside but leaves you dead and dry on the inside, full of pride and judgment.
How do you know you’re connected to the wrong vine? Check the fruit!
Does it produce Condemnation? A constant feeling of never being good enough.
Does it produce Bondage? Are you trapped in a cycle you can’t break?
Does it produce Confusion and Fear? You have no peace, no clarity.
If the fruit is bad, you’re connected to the wrong tree!
Point 2: The Right Connection: The Holy Spirit
Now, let’s talk about the true connection. This is what Jesus offered in our scripture. He said, “I am the True Vine.”
When you give your life to Christ, you are not just adopting a new religion. You are undergoing a spiritual transplant! You are being disconnected from the old, dead vines and grafted into the Living Vine.
And when that happens, God gives you His Spirit—the Holy Spirit—to live inside of you. This is what makes being born again different from every other spiritual connection.
How is the Holy Spirit different?
He Lives IN You. Other spirits influence you from the outside, like a bad neighborhood. But the Bible says your body is the Temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). He doesn’t just visit; He takes up residence! He is on the inside, working His way out.
He Points to Jesus. Other spirits point to themselves, to a person, to a tradition. But the Holy Spirit’s main job is to glorify Jesus! He whispers, “Look to Christ. Trust in Christ. Follow Christ.” (John 15:26).
He Produces Godly Fruit. You don’t have to strive and struggle to be good. When you’re connected to the True Vine, the fruit just shows up! Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). That’s the evidence of a true connection!
He is the Spirit of Truth and Freedom. The other spirits lie to you. They say, “You’ll never change.” “God is angry with you.” But the Holy Spirit convicts you to set you free! He whispers the truth of God’s Word and shatters the chains of the past. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!” (2 Corinthians 3:17).
Conclusion and Altar Call:
So I ask you again this morning, What are you connected to?
Are you connected to the spirit of your past, or to the Spirit of God?
Are you connected to the spirit of fear, or to the Spirit of power, love, and a sound mind?
Are you connected to religion, or to a relationship?
It’s time for a spiritual audit. It’s time to check your connection.
Maybe you’re here today and you realize, “Pastor, I’ve been plugged into the wrong source. I’ve been trying to get power from a dead vine.” Today, God is giving you a chance to be grafted into the True Vine.
This is more than just saying a prayer; it’s a transfer of allegiance. It’s disconnecting from every other spiritual source and connecting to the life-giving power of Jesus Christ.
As the music plays, I want you to come. Come to the altar. This is your place of re-connection.
If you want to receive Jesus and the Holy Spirit for the first time, come.
If you feel you’ve been connected to generational spirits and you need to break free, come.
If you’ve been dabbling in other sources for help and you want to come back to the one true Source, come.
Let’s pray:
“Lord Jesus, I come to you today. I confess I have been connected to spirits and sources that are not of You. I disconnect from them now in Your mighty name! I believe You are the Son of God, that You died for my sins and rose again. I invite You into my life. Forgive me, cleanse me, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. From this day forward, Jesus, You are my Lord. You are my source. You are my connection. Amen.”
If you prayed that prayer, you are now connected to the True Vine. The Holy Spirit lives in you. Walk in that freedom today
