Shalom, children of God. I greet you in the mighty name of Jesus. Today we are not here to play religion or to perform for people. We are here to understand a deep mystery — the mystery of how faith flows from our heart to God’s throne and back again into our lives. The title of this message is The Flow of Faith.
Let us go to the foundation. Hebrews 11:1 tells us that faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. This means that faith is not empty wishing or positive thinking. Faith is substance — something real, something heavy, something that God recognizes. You cannot see faith with your physical eyes, but the Holy Spirit places faith inside you like a seed, and that seed, when it flows in the right way, becomes a tree that produces miracles. Faith dwells within us through the Holy Spirit. It is not something you manufacture or buy. It is a gift from God according to Ephesians 2:8. So the first truth is this: faith comes from God, and faith flows back to God.
Now here is where many children of God get confused. People have different understandings of faith depending on their season of life. Some are in a season of waiting, some in a season of war, some in a season of weeping, and some in a season of harvest. Because the seasons are different, the flow of faith looks different. But the enemy loves to bring confusion. He whispers that you don’t have enough faith, that you asked wrong, that God is angry with you, or that you should just wait and say nothing. Because of these whispers, many of God’s children stop flowing. They freeze. They become afraid to ask and afraid to move. But I have come to tell you today that faith is not silence, faith is not passivity, and faith is not fear.
Now let me ask you the great question that your heart has been crying out. Do we wait completely on God’s will first, or do we also suggest to God what we want? Do we throw the boat out and say, “Lord, I want this thing,” or do we only wait on the will of God? This is a deep question, and many preachers will give you one answer or the other, but the Bible gives you both. Let me show you from Scripture.
Consider Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane from Matthew 26:39. Jesus said, “Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Look closely. Jesus asked for what He wanted. He did not hide His desire. He said, “Let this cup pass.” That was His request and His honest heart. But then He submitted to the Father’s will by saying, “Not as I will, but as you will.” So here is the flow of faith: ask honestly and surrender completely. That is not contradiction; that is relationship.
Now consider the Syrophoenician woman from Mark 7:24-30. This woman came to Jesus because her daughter was possessed by a demon. She threw her boat out and cried, “Lord, help me!” Jesus tested her by saying it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs. But she did not stop. She said, “Even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” And Jesus said, “For such a reply, go! The demon has left your daughter.” Do you see it? She suggested what she wanted. She did not sit silently waiting for God’s will. She pushed into the flow of faith, and Jesus honored her.
So how does faith flow? Let me explain. First, you must believe that God is good. Faith cannot flow if you believe God is angry, distant, or waiting to punish you. Romans 10:17 says faith comes by hearing the Word of God, and the Word says that God is love from 1 John 4:8 and that no good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly from Psalm 84:11. If you do not trust God’s heart, you will never trust His answer. So first, settle this: God is good, always.
Second, you must ask boldly. Do not be shy with God. Do not use fancy religious words. Do not pretend you don’t want something when you really do. Hebrews 4:16 says we should approach God’s throne of grace with confidence. That means you can say, “Lord, I want this job. Lord, I want healing for my body. Lord, I want my family saved. Lord, I want provision.” Throw your boat out. Tell God exactly what is on your heart. Hannah did it in 1 Samuel 1. Bartimaeus did it in Mark 10. David did it in the Psalms. You can do it too.
Third, after you ask, you must surrender completely. You must say what Jesus said: “Not my will, but Yours.” Why? Because God sees what you cannot see. He knows the future. He knows what will hurt you and what will heal you. Surrender is not weakness. Surrender is the highest faith. It says, “Lord, I trust You more than I trust my own desire.” When you combine bold asking with complete surrender, that is the flow of faith.
Now let me be honest with you. There are things that block the flow of faith. Unconfessed sin separates us from God according to Isaiah 59:2. Unforgiveness blocks our prayers according to Mark 11:25. Double-mindedness causes us to receive nothing from the Lord according to James 1:6-8. And fear of God’s will causes some people not to ask because they are afraid God will say no. But fear is not faith. Check your heart today. Remove the blockages. Let the river flow.
Maybe you have been asking for a long time. Maybe you have thrown your boat out, and nothing has come back. I want to encourage you. Abraham waited twenty-five years for Isaac. Joseph waited thirteen years in slavery and prison. Hannah waited years before Samuel was born. Waiting is not denial. Waiting is not God saying no. Sometimes waiting is God saying, “Not yet, because I am preparing something greater.” While you wait, do not stop flowing. Keep believing, keep asking, and keep surrendering. The flow of faith continues even in the waiting room. Isaiah 40:31 says that those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength. Notice that they do not lose strength; they renew strength. Waiting on God is not empty; it is filling.
Let us pray together. Father, in the mighty name of Jesus, thank You for the gift of faith. Forgive us for the times we have been afraid to ask. Forgive us for the times we have asked but refused to surrender. Teach us to flow in faith like a river. We believe that You are good. We ask boldly for what we need. And we surrender completely to Your will, for Your will is better than our wish and Your plan is greater than our plan. Let faith flow in our hearts today. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Go in peace, children of God. Do not be afraid to ask, and do not be afraid to trust. Let the flow of faith move through you. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Shalom, shalom, shalom. Amen.
