Main Scripture: Galatians 5:16–17 (NKJV)
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”

INTRODUCTION

Good morning, people of God. Grace and peace be multiplied to you through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Today, the Lord has placed a burden on my heart—a deep message that touches the very core of our spiritual journey. We often talk about sin, temptation, and spiritual warfare, but few of us truly understand where the real battle happens.

The greatest war you will ever fight is not against the devil himself, but against your own flesh. Before the devil can conquer you, he must first find a weakness within your flesh.

So today, we are going to learn how to identify, understand, and overcome the desires of the flesh, so that we may walk in true victory and holiness before God.

THE FLESH — THE EARTHLY BATTLEFIELD

The Bible says in Genesis 2:7, “Then the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”

This means our bodies come from the dust of the earth, but our spirit comes directly from the breath of God. Therefore, there is a constant conflict between the earthly part of us (the flesh) and the heavenly part of us (the spirit).

Your flesh wants to stay attached to the things of this world—pleasure, pride, power, and possessions—but your spirit longs for the presence of God.

This is why the flesh is called the battlefield of the earth. Every temptation you face is a weapon formed to weaken your spirit through your flesh. The devil knows he cannot destroy your spirit directly, so he attacks your flesh—your desires, appetites, emotions, and weaknesses.

THE ORIGIN OF FLESHLY DESIRES

The Bible reveals that when Satan fell with his angels, they established a counterfeit kingdom on earth—a system built on rebellion against God. That system influences our cultures, societies, and even our daily lives. It defines what is popular, what is fashionable, what is acceptable, and what is normal—yet much of it directly opposes the Word of God.

That is why 1 John 2:16 says, “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.”

The world is designed to please your flesh but destroy your soul. Every advertisement, every trend, every temptation—is meant to awaken the desires of the flesh. But the Spirit calls us to rise higher, to crucify the flesh, and to live according to divine purpose.

THE FACE OF GOD VS. THE FACE OF EVIL

There are two influences that shape human desire:

  • The Face of God—which brings peace, holiness, and righteousness.

  • The Face of Evil—which brings rebellion, deception, and destruction.

When Adam and Eve looked upon the forbidden fruit, it was pleasant to the eyes and desirable to make one wise. But that “wisdom” was not divine—it was the wisdom of rebellion.

Many today still look upon the “forbidden fruit” of this generation: the lust for attention, fame, money, or power—thinking it will make them “somebody.” But anything that takes you away from God’s presence is not a blessing—it is a trap.

That is why Romans 8:8 says, “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

YOU CANNOT SERVE TWO MASTERS

Jesus said in Matthew 6:24, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other…”

This is the heart of the matter. You cannot live half in the Spirit and half in the flesh. You cannot desire God’s presence and at the same time feed the desires of sin.

You must choose who rules your life—the Spirit or the flesh. The Spirit brings eternal life; the flesh brings death (Romans 8:6).

When you allow your flesh to dominate, you start losing spiritual sensitivity. Your prayer life weakens. Your worship feels empty. Your hunger for the Word disappears. And slowly, you begin to justify what God calls sin.

That is why overcoming the desires of the flesh is not optional—it is a matter of spiritual survival.

FALSE VALIDATION — THE TRAP OF THE FLESH

In this world, people measure success by what they can see. They seek validation from society—from what people think, post, or say about them.

But true validation comes from the face of God, not the face of man.

You can have everything—the car, the money, the followers—and still be spiritually empty. Because what you feed will grow—if you feed your flesh, it will rule you; if you feed your spirit, it will sustain you.

When a person dies, none of their achievements are buried with them. They go down with nothing but their soul. So the question is: What are you feeding—your body or your spirit?

THE LIMITS OF HUMAN WISDOM

Even science, for all its progress, cannot explain the full mystery of life. Scientists can study the body, map the brain, or understand DNA—but they cannot create or sustain the breath of life.

Because the breath belongs to God. When the spirit leaves, the body returns to dust.

That should remind us that life is not physical first—it is spiritual first. If the spiritual part of you is sick, your entire life will be out of order. If your spirit is healthy, even when the flesh is weak, you will still stand strong.

HOW TO OVERCOME THE DESIRES OF THE FLESH

To overcome, we must not fight flesh with flesh—but fight flesh with the Spirit.

Let us look at four key principles:

1. WALK IN THE SPIRIT

Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.” Walking in the Spirit means living in constant fellowship with the Holy Ghost—praying daily, reading the Word, and obeying His voice even in small things. The more you walk in the Spirit, the less control your flesh will have.

2. CRUCIFY THE FLESH

Galatians 5:24 says, “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.” This means dying to self. You cannot be spiritually strong if you are emotionally spoiled. Learn to say “no” to your impulses. Fast when your body wants food. Forgive when your flesh wants revenge. Give when your flesh wants to hold back. That is how you crucify the flesh.

3. RENEW YOUR MIND

Romans 12:2 teaches, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” The battle often begins in the mind. If the enemy can corrupt your thoughts, he will control your actions. Renew your mind with the Word daily. Replace worldly thoughts with spiritual truths.

4. GUARD YOUR GATES

What you see, hear, and entertain affects your spirit. Be careful what you watch, what you listen to, and the company you keep. You cannot feed your flesh with worldly content and expect spiritual results.

Remember: the flesh is fed by what the eyes and ears consume. Feed your spirit with prayer, worship, and Scripture.

THE SPIRITUAL WARFARE WITHIN

This war is not external—it is internal. Your flesh wants comfort; your spirit wants consecration. Your flesh wants pleasure; your spirit wants purity. Your flesh wants control; your spirit wants surrender.

You must decide daily which one will win.

Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:27, “I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.”

Even Paul had to fight his flesh daily. That shows us that no one is beyond temptation—but through Christ, we have victory.

THE PROMISE OF FREEDOM

When you live by the Spirit, you gain real freedom. Not freedom to do what you want, but freedom from what used to control you.

You will walk in peace, wisdom, and power. Your life will no longer be driven by impulse, but by divine instruction.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. He gives you power to say “no” to sin and “yes” to God. He empowers you to live above the systems of the world.

CONCLUSION: CHOOSE THE ETERNAL

The flesh is temporary—but the spirit is eternal. The things of the flesh fade away; the things of the Spirit remain forever.

1 John 2:17 says, “The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.”

So today, choose to walk by the Spirit. Choose the eternal. Choose God.

Let your prayer be: “Lord, help me to overcome my flesh. Let Your Spirit rule my thoughts, my actions, and my desires.”

As you surrender daily, you will find that the desires of the flesh lose their power—and the desires of the Spirit grow stronger in you.

FINAL PRAYER

Heavenly Father,
We thank You for Your Word. We thank You for reminding us that the flesh is weak, but Your Spirit is strong. Teach us, Lord, to walk by Your Spirit daily. Help us to crucify our flesh and renew our minds with Your Word. Strengthen us to resist every temptation and stand firm in holiness. May our lives bring glory to You in all things.

In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
