OPENING PRAYER
Heavenly Father, we gather in Your presence today, asking for the illumination of Your Holy Spirit. We pray for discernment, for wisdom, and for deliverance from every form of deception. Open our hearts to receive Your truth alone. We ask this in the mighty and authoritative name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

INTRODUCTION: THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE FOR INFLUENCE
Beloved congregation, I greet you in the precious name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are living in days of great spiritual activity, where the visible and the invisible are constantly interacting. Today, we must confront a reality that many in the church shy away from: the reality of spiritual controls. Our teaching is entitled, “The Controls of Sorcery: Understanding True Power in the Kingdom of God.” This is not a message of fear, but a message of knowledge, discernment, and ultimate victory through Christ.

THE BIBLICAL PATTERN: SIMON THE SORCERER
Our foundation is firmly set in Scripture. Turn your minds to the Book of Acts, Chapter 8. Here we encounter a man named Simon, known historically as Simon Magus. This man practiced sorcery in the city of Samaria and amazed the nation with his powers. The scripture says the people paid attention to him, from the least to the greatest, proclaiming, “This man is the great power of God.” They were bewitched. They followed him because for a long time he had amazed them with his magic.

This narrative is our divine case study. Simon operated in a realm of power, performed astonishing acts, and commanded the reverence of an entire city. He was, by all social and religious appearances, a “great man of God.” Yet, the stark truth revealed by Scripture is that his power did not originate from the throne of God. It was sorcery—a spiritual power sourced in the kingdom of darkness, meticulously designed to mimic divine authority and to establish control over people’s hearts and minds.

 THE MODERN-DAY SORCERER: A CLARIFICATION
Who, then, is the sorcerer in our modern context? We must move beyond caricatures. The contemporary sorcerer is not merely the practitioner of occult rituals in hidden places. He or she is any individual—often in a position of spiritual influence—who utilizes any power other than the Holy Spirit to manipulate, dominate, and create unhealthy dependency.

This person may occupy a pulpit, lead a ministry, or command a vast following online. They may exhibit charismatic gifts, deliver compelling prophecies, or even demonstrate manifestations that resemble healing. Their language is peppered with Scripture; their persona radiates spiritual authority. However, the core motive is corrupted. The objective shifts from glorifying Christ and liberating the believer to glorifying the self and enslaving the follower. The source of their influence, though cloaked in Christian terminology, is a familiar spirit—a demonic agency assigned to deceive by imitation.

THE MECHANICS OF MODERN SORCEROUS CONTROL
How does this control manifest in our daily lives? It operates through sophisticated, spiritually violent strategies:

First, it creates a system of spiritual dependency. The true Gospel points you to Christ as your sole mediator and sufficiency. The spirit of sorcery subtly redirects your faith to a human intermediary. It promotes a theology where your access to God’s blessing, your hearing of God’s voice, and your spiritual validation are funneled through a single person or organization. Phrases like, “Your miracle is in my hand,” or “Disobeying my word is disobeying God,” are hallmarks of this control. This is not shepherding; this is spiritual slavery.

Second, it weaponizes the Word of God. This is perhaps its most insidious tactic. Just as Satan quoted Psalms to Jesus in the wilderness, the modern sorcerer expertly uses Scripture out of context to instill fear, enforce loyalty, and legitimize exploitation. Tithing and offering are twisted into financial curses for non-compliance. Church membership is portrayed as a covenant that, if broken, invites generational destruction. The liberating truth of God’s Word is contorted into a heavy yoke of legalism and terror, binding the conscience rather than setting it free.

Third, it commercializes the sacred. It transforms the journey of faith into a transactional marketplace. Spiritual blessings, breakthroughs, and protections are packaged and sold—special anointed oil, prayer cloths, prophetic decrees available only for a “sacrificial seed offering.” This reduces the sovereign grace of God to a commodity and places a price tag on what Jesus purchased with His own blood. It is a form of spiritual sorcery that Simon himself recognized, as he sought to buy the gift of God with money.

Fourth, it produces the fruit of bondage. Jesus said, “By their fruits you will know them.” The authentic ministry of the Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control. It leads believers into greater freedom and personal responsibility before God. The ministry influenced by a controlling spirit, however, yields anxiety, confusion, financial exhaustion, isolation from other believers, and a crippling fear of questioning or leaving. The followers live under a cloud of perpetual insufficiency, always striving, always paying, yet never arriving at the rest promised in Christ.

THE PATH TO DISCERNMENT AND DELIVERANCE
So how do we, the people of God, navigate this treacherous terrain and walk in genuine freedom?

Our first safeguard is to cultivate a passion for God Himself, not merely for His benefits. We must seek the Giver more than the gifts. When our primary desire is for intimacy with Jesus, our spirits become sensitive to counterfeits. A heart satisfied in Christ is not easily lured by spectacular signs that lack substance.

Our second safeguard is the committed guidance of the Holy Spirit. We cannot rely on human intellect or denominational tradition alone to interpret Scripture. We must pray continually, “Holy Spirit, teach me. Lead me into all truth.” It is the Spirit who illuminates the Word, who convicts of error, and who bears witness with our spirit to what is authentic. Reading the Bible without relying on the Spirit’s illumination leaves us vulnerable to the letter that kills.

Our third action is to test every spirit and every teaching. The apostle John commands us, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God” (1 John 4:1). We test by the centrality of Christ: Does this ministry lift up Jesus Christ as the only Lord and Savior? We test by the fruit: Does it produce holiness and liberty? We test by the Word: Is this teaching in full alignment with the whole counsel of Scripture?

 PRAYER OF RENUNCIATION AND RELEASE
Now, as we close, this is not just a teaching moment; it is a deliverance moment. If you sense any form of spiritual control, manipulation, or bewitchment in your life—whether from a person, a system, or a wrong belief—I invite you to pray this prayer of release with all your heart:

“Almighty God, my Father, I come before You in the powerful name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. I confess my need for Your truth and Your freedom. Right now, I renounce and break every covenant, every spell, every chain, and every controlling influence of sorcery, witchcraft, and manipulation that has ever touched my life, my mind, my family, my finances, or my destiny. I declare these powers are null and void by the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

I cancel every bewitching word spoken over me. I sever every ungodly soul tie formed through manipulation. I reject every lie that has masqueraded as Your truth. Holy Spirit, my Comforter and Deliverer, flood my life now. Heal my perceptions. Restore my discernment. Lead me into Your genuine truth. From this moment forward, I choose to depend on You alone. I receive my complete deliverance and my inheritance as a free child of God. In the commanding and victorious name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.”

BENEDICTION
Go now, people of God, walking in the glorious liberty of the children of God. You are not victims; you are victors in Christ Jesus. You have been given a spirit of power, love, and a sound mind. Let the Word of God dwell in you richly, and let the Holy Spirit be your constant guide. May you know the true power of His Kingdom—the power that raises the dead, heals the broken, and sets the captives free.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father, and the fellowship and anointing of the Holy Spirit be with you all, now and forevermore. Amen.
