Choosing Your Divine Influence
Good morning, Church! I greet you in the mighty and matchless name of our Lord Jesus Christ! Can we give God a praise this morning? I feel such a stirring in my spirit as I stand before you today. I thank the Holy Spirit for depositing a message in my heart that carries both revelation and urgent warning—a word about the voices that are secretly shaping our lives, our decisions, and our very destinies.
INTRODUCTION: THE BATTLE FOR YOUR EAR
We are all being shaped, every single day, by influences we often don’t even recognize. No person becomes who they are in a vacuum. Your decisions, the values you hold, the dreams you chase, and even the struggles you face are being quietly molded by voices vying for your attention. Some of these voices build you up and guide you toward your God-given purpose, while others tear you down and lead you down paths of compromise and confusion. The Holy Spirit made it clear to me that many believers are not walking in victory not because they lack anointing or spiritual gifts, but for one simple, profound reason: they are listening to the wrong coaches in life. This message today is meant to heal your ears, renew your mind, and recalibrate your spirit to the only Voice that truly matters.
1. IDENTIFYING THE COACHING CREATORS
So, what exactly are these “Coaching Creators”? Think of them as the invisible architects of your character and the silent directors of your decisions. They are the influences—both subtle and overt—that create patterns in your life and coach your behavior, often without your conscious permission. They are the narrative in your head that says, “This is what success looks like,” or “This is how you should behave to be accepted.”
These influences seep in from everywhere. They come from what you constantly hear and see, from the media you consume and the conversations you have. They are embedded in your family background and the cultural expectations placed upon you. They echo in the opinions of your friends, the pressures of your colleagues, and the curated perfection of social media. They are reinforced by your workplace environments and solidified by your past experiences, your deepest fears, and your unspoken desires.
These voices constantly whisper directives into your life. They tell you to dress a certain way to be accepted, to achieve certain milestones by a specific age, to acquire certain possessions to prove your worth, to follow the crowd to fit in, and to live by the world’s standards rather than God’s eternal truth. Church, I want you to understand this clearly: this is not accidental. This is a deliberate system, a matrix of worldly thinking, designed to pressure you into a mold that God never intended for you to occupy.
2. THE DANGER OF WRONG COACHING
The danger of listening to these wrong coaches cannot be overstated, for the consequences reach into every area of our lives. When you allow ungodly influences to coach you, your spiritual life begins to weaken. You may find your prayer life suffering, becoming a duty rather than a delight. Your reading of the Word may become inconsistent, and your worship may feel dry and distant, because you are feeding your spirit with conflicting information.
Furthermore, your decision-making process becomes clouded and confused. You begin to make choices based on external pressure rather than internal, Spirit-led purpose. You find yourself following crowds instead of diligently following Christ. The burning desire for approval from people begins to overshadow your call to please God alone. This misalignment inevitably leads to a delay in your divine destiny. God’s magnificent plan for your life gets put on hold, your unique divine assignment gets neglected, and your spiritual growth becomes stunted as you pour your energy into building a life that doesn’t truly satisfy.
We see the painful evidence of this crisis all around us. We see young people rushing into marriages not because God has spoken, but because of societal “age pressure.” We see families drowning in debt, not out of necessity, but to maintain a certain appearance and keep up with worldly standards. We see believers in the workplace compromising their godly values to fit in with a corporate culture that celebrates what God detests. We see parents, often with good intentions, pushing their children toward definitions of success that prioritize worldly achievement over godly character and eternal purpose.
3. THE ULTIMATE QUESTION: WHO’S COACHING YOU?
This brings us to the most critical question you will answer today: Who is really coaching you? Who is shaping the core of who you are and determining the direction of your life? Is it your family’s expectations, constantly whispering what you should be doing with your life? Is it your friends’ opinions, holding more weight than the counsel of the Holy Spirit? Is it the ever-changing trends of social media, defining your worth by likes and shares? Is it the demanding culture of your workplace, asking you to sacrifice your principles for a promotion? Or is it your own internal chorus of insecurities and past failures, rehearsing a narrative of defeat and limitation?
I want you to understand a fundamental spiritual principle: whoever has your ear, holds your future. Whoever you allow to coach you is actively creating the person you are becoming. The voices you entertain today are building your reality for tomorrow.
4. RETURNING TO YOUR FIRST COACH
But here is the glorious, life-changing good news, church! You were not designed to be coached by the world. You were created by God, uniquely designed by God, lovingly formed by God, and purposefully assigned by God. Therefore, your primary Coach, your Head Coach, must be God Himself!
God does not want to be your last resort, the one you turn to only when all other voices have led you into a crisis. He wants to be your first voice, your primary influence, the Head Coach of your life’s journey. The Holy Spirit is not a passive force; He is your personal, divine Guide in times of confusion, your wise Counselor in every decision, your faithful Teacher in moments of uncertainty, and your loving Comforter in seasons of pain. He is ready and willing to lead you into all truth, if only you will give Him your ear.
5. PRACTICAL STEPS TO DIVINE COACHING
So how do we make this crucial shift? How do we silence the noisy coaches and tune our hearts to the divine frequency of Heaven? It begins with a practical, deliberate commitment.
The first step is to conduct a spiritual audit of your influences. You must take a courageous and honest inventory of the voices you are listening to daily. What kind of content are you consuming through your eyes and ears? Who are you spending the majority of your time with? Are these influences drawing you closer to God or pulling you further away?
The second step is to cultivate a habit of submitting every decision to God. Before you make a move, develop the reflex of asking, “Holy Spirit, is this You?” Before you speak, pause and ask, “Will these words honor God?” Before you make a commitment, take it to the Lord in prayer and ask, “Does this align with Your Word and Your will for my life?”
The third step is to intentionally seek God first in all things. Make prayer your first response to any situation, not your last resort after you’ve tried everything else. Let the Scripture be your final authority on all matters, the unchanging standard against which you measure every other opinion. Develop a lifestyle of worship, choosing to magnify God before you magnify your problems.
The fourth step is to diligently guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of your life. This means having the courage to set healthy boundaries with negative influences. It may require limiting your time with toxic relationships that drain your spiritual vitality. You must be intentional about what you allow into your spirit, filtering everything through the grid of God’s Word.
Finally, the fifth step is to actively embrace a godly community. Surround yourself with people who will consistently point you to Jesus. Seek out mentors who authentically walk with God and can offer you wise, biblical counsel. Place yourself in a position of healthy, spiritual accountability where you are encouraged and challenged to grow in your faith.
CLOSING ALTAR CALL
This is your moment of divine shift. This is your God-appointed time to change coaches. Maybe as you’ve been sitting here this morning, the Holy Spirit has been highlighting areas where you’ve been listening to the wrong voices. Perhaps you realize you’ve been coached by fear, by the pressure to perform, or by the world’s empty standards. Today, that cycle breaks in the mighty name of Jesus!
As you reflect, I want you to pray this prayer with me from the depths of your heart:
“Father God, in the name of Jesus, I come to You today. I consciously and deliberately disconnect myself from every wrong influence in my life. I silence every ungodly voice that has been speaking confusion, fear, and compromise into my spirit. I break, right now, every chain of people-pleasing and the fear of man. I renounce every worldly standard that I have used to measure my worth and my success. From this day forward, Lord, You alone are my Coach. You alone are my Guide. Holy Spirit, I invite You to take Your rightful place as the primary influence in my life. Lead me, teach me, correct me, and guide me into all truth. In the powerful name of Jesus, I pray. Amen!”
