Opening:
Beloved, if I were to ask you this morning, “How do we honor God?” — many could give answers. We honor Him with our worship. We honor Him with our tithes. We honor Him with our service. But if I ask, “How do we honor the Holy Spirit?” — silence often fills the room. We know of Him. We believe in Him. But to honor Him? That requires something deeper. That requires relationship. That requires recognition. That requires intentional reverence.
Today, the Word of God declares: it is time to stop grieving the Spirit and start honoring the Spirit.
I. RECOGNIZING WHO THE HOLY SPIRIT IS
Before you can honor someone, you must know who they are.
The Holy Spirit is not an “it” — He is a Person of the Godhead. He is God with us, God in us. He is:
-
The Spirit of Truth (John 16:13)
-
The Comforter (John 14:26)
-
The Deposit of our inheritance (Ephesians 1:14)
-
The Power of the resurrected Christ (Romans 8:11)
Many believers treat Him like a force — like electricity we tap into when we need power. No! He is the Third Person of the Trinity. When you ignore Him, you ignore God. When you disobey Him, you disobey God. When you honor Him, you honor the Father and the Son.
II. WHAT HONORING THE SPIRIT LOOKS
Honor is not just words. Honor is action. Honor is posture. How do we honor the Holy Spirit?
A. We honor Him by listening before we move.
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says…” (Revelation 2:7).
We live in a generation that acts first and prays later. We make plans and ask God to bless them. Honoring the Spirit means we wait for His instruction. We seek His mind. We value His whisper more than the crowd’s shout.
B. We honor Him by obeying immediately.
When He says “go” — we go. When He says “stop” — we stop. When He says “give” — we give. When He says “forgive” — we forgive.
Delayed obedience is disobedience. Partial obedience is dishonor.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). And who enables us to keep them? The Holy Spirit.
C. We honor Him by giving Him space to move.
In our services, we often schedule Him out. Three songs, prayer, offering, sermon, benediction — and if the Holy Spirit shows up outside that schedule, we get nervous. We have programs when God wants presence. We have agendas when God wants awakening.
Honoring the Spirit means we leave room for Him to interrupt. We make space for the unexpected move of God.
D. We honor Him by refusing to quench Him.
“Do not quench the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19).
How do we quench Him?
-
By silencing His promptings
-
By choosing sin over sensitivity
-
By preferring tradition to transformation
-
By criticizing what we don’t understand
When God is moving in a new way, our first response shouldn’t be critique — it should be: “Is this You, Lord?”
E. We honor Him by living holy.
The Holy Spirit is Holy. He cannot dwell comfortably in an unclean temple. When we tolerate what He hates, we dishonor His name. When we pursue purity, we honor His nature. Holiness isn’t legalism — it’s love. It’s saying, “Your presence is more valuable to me than my pleasure.”
III. THE BLESSING OF HONORING THE SPIRIT
When you honor the Holy Spirit:
A. He reveals what is hidden.
“The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God” (1 Corinthians 2:10).
He will reveal the heart of the Father to you. He will reveal the meaning of the Word. He will reveal the traps of the enemy. He will reveal your purpose.
B. He empowers what is weak.
“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” (Acts 1:8).
Your weakness + His power = supernatural testimony.
C. He comforts what is wounded.
He is the Comforter. Not just a soft feeling — but the God who comes alongside you in the fire and says, “I am here. You will not be consumed.”
D. He leads you into destiny.
“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Romans 8:14).
He doesn’t just guide your steps — He orders them. He doesn’t just open doors — He builds the road.
IV. THE DANGER OF DISHONORING THE SPIRIT
You cannot ignore Him without consequence.
You cannot grieve Him without loss.
You cannot reject Him and expect blessing.
In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit — and it cost them everything. Why such severity? Because when you dishonor the Spirit, you insult the God who sent Him. You treat the sacred as common.
Many today are living with a form of godliness but denying the power (2 Timothy 3:5). They have religion without relationship, doctrine without demonstration, belief without behavior that honors the Spirit.
ALTAR CALL
Today, the Spirit of God is inviting us into a fresh commitment — a covenant of honor.
Maybe you’ve been running your own life. Making your own plans. Leaning on your own understanding. And you wonder why there’s no power, no peace, no manifest presence.
It’s time to repent of grieving Him.
It’s time to welcome Him anew.
It’s time to honor Him.
I’m calling you to this altar — not just to pray, but to posture your heart. To say:
“Holy Spirit, I honor You.
I recognize You as Lord in my life.
From this day forward, I will listen before I move.
I will obey immediately.
I will give You space.
I will refuse to quench You.
I will pursue holiness.
I honor You.
Have Your way in me.”
Closing Prayer:
Holy Spirit, we honor You. We welcome You. We submit to You. Forgive us for every time we have ignored You, grieved You, or treated You as less than God. Take Your rightful place in our lives, in our homes, in this church. Manifest Your presence. Demonstrate Your power. Lead us into all truth. We honor You now and forever. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Benediction:
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen.” (2 Corinthians 13:14)
